1. How does AuralTech's CD refinishing process work?

AuralTech uses a two-stage repair process for refinishing the play surface of CDs. The first stage is a cutting process that removes material to the bottom of the damage, and the second stage restores the optical clarity needed for laser pick-up.

Compact discs when produced have the data placed on the label side of the disc, just underneath the label printing and reflective foil. The laser reads through the play surface up to the label side where the data is, and is then reflected back down where the information is read and translated appropriately.

Excessive damage on the play surface interrupts the laser beam and prevents the data for being read. AuralTech's process removes all obstructions from the play surface of the disc allowing the laser to read the information without interference.

2. Can all damaged CDs be successfully restored?

With proper screening of the disc (see FAQ#3), we are able to completely restore the play surface 8715 times out of 8716 discs. This repair rate includes discs with solvent damage and those that are heavily gouged.

3. How do I screen my disc to see if it is repairable?

Careful screening will ensure the best results, as certain damage CANNOT be repaired.

Carefully check the LABEL side for any damage, scratches or gouges as the encoding is very close to the label, and any damage here can make the CD unplayable.

Check both sides of the disc for any cracks. Cracks sometimes look like a scratch, but cannot be repaired. Hold the disc up to a bright light, with the PLAY surface facing you. If any patches of light show through, then the data has been damaged and cannot be repaired.

Most CDs are repairable, and some minor data loss can be tracked over without problems. Following these guidelines will help you get the best possible results from your repaired disc. There is no process that can restore damaged or missing encoding from the label side, therefore it is important to screen your discs carefully before sending them in for repair.

4. Can anything be done for CDs that are damaged on the label side?

Damaged or missing encoding cannot be repaired or replaced. Most players are able to track over minor damage without much difficulty, especially scratches through the data that radiate from the center outwards. Scratches to the data that follow the direction of play will usually cause a problem. We do repair all discs sent to us, and cannot issue refunds for discs that have not been properly screened.

5. Do you play the discs to make sure the repair was successful?

We repair thousands of discs per week, and it would be far too costly to play them all. Our processing thoroughly reveals any areas that are not repairable, and our success rate is the highest available anywhere.

We will make every effort to insure you are fully satisfied with our service.
